The Architecture Team was thrilled by our clients request to design a contemporary off-grid cabin in the hills of West Danby, and our Build Team was up for the challenge. Our client was looking for a four season, one bedroom, cabin to supplement his existing three season dome tent and expand his summer entertaining space.
The dramatic site was the primary driver of the design. Nestled in the tree line at the top of a rolling meadow, the site offers beautiful views southeast across a deep valley and to hills beyond. To capitalize on these views, we stacked the kitchen/dining area and the master bedroom along the side of the cabin overlooking the valley. A second floor balcony was also added providing sweeping views from a perch up above.
Being primarily a summer retreat, we pushed the dramatic two-story living room to the rear of the cabin, where it will stay shaded and cool year round. The structure is completely off grid, with a small solar array providing electric power, a small gas heater providing heat and hot water, a wood stove for supplemental heating, and well and septic for water and waste. It was a unique challenge and our team enjoyed the undertaking.
